Should my manual call points have covers?

When you install a fire alarm system, accidental and malicious false alarms are common in some buildings, as the manual call points are the most vulnerable part. However, with manual call point covers (also call point stoppers), the fire alarm system can be protected.

The manual call point covers are located on the wall at average arm’s height and are bright red in colour, making them hard to miss and therefore easy to find in an emergency. But for some people, this makes them irresistible to tamper with or play pranks on.

Being at this height means that the manual call points are vulnerable to impact, whether it is a passing elbow, a person with a backpack, or being hit by a vacuum cleaner.

Therefore, all manual call points should be fitted with protective covers that allow access to fragile elements when removed. These should be placed particularly in vulnerable areas prone to false activation.
